What has all this to do with self improvement, you ask? Well quite a lot, actually.
Sports Psychology and Self Improvement -getting the very best out of your self- are
closely and intimately related.
Today I’ll introduce you to one of the most powerful techniques in the book, a
technique which is designed to change your life. It’s called the Dickens Process.
Anthony Robbins is one guy who uses this to help people get back on track.
Say you’re in a bad comfort zone, you have habits that will ruin your life, maybe
even kill you in the long run.
Smoking, over-eating, gambling, drugs, drink, you name it. Stuff like that. Say you
tried to quit but no-go.
Well, try this…I mean, really try it, give it a chance. What’s to lose?
The concept is simple: to make you feel the pain, and the future of it, to give you
true clarity on what you’re actually doing to your self…and what will happen if
you don’t stop. Now.
The first step is to write down a list of bad beliefs. Bad Beliefs can be a
Here are some examples:
I can’t do it. I tried, I failed, I can’t.
Now next to that, write the exact opposite, the positive opposite:
I can do it, I WILL DO IT, Consider it DONE!
I’m never going to be lean and fit.
I can see it now: I’m lean, sexy, I feel and look great! Victory!
I’m too lazy.
I’m super-motivated, super active, living the life!
It’s a good idea to not write out this opposite in a negative sense. What I mean by
this is, don’t say “I’m not weak. Say: “I’m Strong.”
Don’t say: “I’m not a loser”, but: “I’m a Winner.” You get the drift…
In this article we use a guy who eats too much of the wrong foods and knows it. He’s
already out of shape and not too good looking any more, yet it’s a downward spiral:
all diet attempts have failed and he’s getting fatter by the minute.
Say his name is Billy Joe JimBob. For illustration purposes…
So here is how you should put the Dickens Process into practice, Billy Joe JimBob.
Your bad belief is: I can’t do it. I tried, I failed, I can’t.
Stand or sit in front of the mirror.
Now focus on the negative beliefs you have. Eyes closed, think it over: how has your
life turned out so far because of them? Where have you screwed up because of this
and where did it get you? Try to re-live the failures, the embarrassment. Be totally
honest now Billy, because this is your life.
Now PROJECT INTO THE FUTURE, and see how things are likely to develop if nothing
changes. Will all the bad stuff go away by itself? Not likely…
How will it be in 6 months? Are you still in your same work place? Or have you lost
the job, doing something worse? How about that body weight? Is it going up? Belly
just a little bigger, Billy?
Feeling happy, successful, healthy and fulfilled? Why not?
Now it’s important to continue, take this serious…because things will get more
2 years down the line.
Billy’s on medications. They’re not healthy, but keep the blood pressure down.
Our imaginary friend is totally BLOATED already, his energy is at an all-time low
and all the fun has somehow disappeared from life… gone…
But we’re still going.
How is it in 5 years?
BJJB is absolutely inactive, the only thing that cuts it for him now is watching
movies, playing computer games and eating, though the food hardly tastes good any
That body weight is way out of whack now, we’re approaching clinically obese with
all colors flying.
The job? Gone, it’s unemployment benefits now, because…how could anyone work like
this? No energy, can’t walk up the stairs very well.
In 15 years… 1st heart attack… just survived it…
Two miserable years more:
Now observe this funeral Billy Joe, just like Scrooge did in the Christmas Carol.
You hear what people say about you, but you can also see what they’re thinking:
“Small wonder, I mean, he was THAT fat? Surprised he made it this long, the
Past, Present and Future. Learn from the past to make the most of the present to have a great future.
How cool would it be, if you could, just like Scrooge, start over and do it right
So you imagined all these depressing scenes, and I assume you’re still in front of
Open your eyes, hop into that time machine and zoom back to the present, today.
And now we repeat the whole process, traveling into a brighter future, with the
positive belief instead:
I can do it, I WILL DO IT, Consider it DONE!
See yourself in 6 months, Billy, and you’ll notice you have dropped quite a lot of
weight! You hold your head high, because you’re proud!
In just one year, the deed is done: you’re at 10% body fat, looking and feeling GREAT!
- New Girlfriend
- Tons of energy
- You’re the supervisor now…
5 more years, BJJB is a partner in the company.
Not only that, he’s also married to a good, beautiful woman, second child on the way,
and Billy is a leader in his community, people look up to him, he’s their role
Thus Billy has turned that life around, sky’s the limit, there’s opportunities
everywhere and he make the most of them. Our friend achieves whatever he sets his
mind to achieve…
BECAUSE HE KNOWS HE CAN!
Well congrats Billy Joe: you just saved your own life. And set yourself up for an
awesome fun ride.
Here’s to the future!
